Prior to beginning her graduate studies, Laura M. Roman worked as a research associate in the laboratory of Dr. Gerald Edelman (Nobel Prize, 1972) at the Rockefeller University. She then obtained her Ph.D. in cell biology from Yale University, and carried out her post-doctoral training at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and the HHMI at UT Southwestern in Dallas. Before joining the Division of Receipt and Referral (DRR) in November 2004, Dr. Roman held faculty positions in the physiology departments of Yale School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University. During that period, her lab focused on the effects of retinoids on cell differentiation, and the role of cranial neural crest cells in craniofacial development using zebrafish as a model system. Recently, she authored a chapter on Signal Transduction for Medical Physiology (Boron and Boelpaep. Eds.).

She is an associate director in DRR and recently obtained her MBA from Loyola College of Maryland.
