Can I accept free registration from an organization when it is being offered to speakers? Do I need written approval to review manuscripts for a journal? These are the kinds of questions that Anne Stroh is asked on a typical day in her position as CSR's ethics coordinator. Anne is responsible for working with CSR employees to answer and facilitate their requests for outside activities, use of outreach funds, and review of financial disclosure statements. After receiving a B.A. degree from Barat College in Lake Forest, Illinois, Anne began her government career in personnel with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She spent several years with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute before joining the Division of Research Grants (now CSR) to work in human resources, where serving as the ethics coordinator began as only a minor part of her job. As her ethics responsibilities have grown, Anne has become the initial point of contact for CSR staff for advice on ethics related to employment at NIH. She interviews all job applicants and new employees to explain NIH ethics policies and procedures for requesting approval for various activities. In addition to preparing numerous reports, Anne provides advice to supervisors and employees on various issues related to ethics, conflicts of interest, and outside activities.
