Dr. Joanna Pyper is the Scientific Review Officer for CSR’s Virology A Study Section and Deputy Chief for the Infectious Disease and Microbiology IRG. She came to this position after participating in CSR's Review Internship Program. Dr. Pyper received her Ph.D. in biology from Johns Hopkins University where she focused her research on caprine arthritis encephalitis virus, a lentivirus (retrovirus) of goats. Its homology with HIV-1 helped establish that HIV-1 is a lentivirus. When Dr. Pyper was a postdoctoral fellow at the NCI, she investigated neuronal forms of the cellular src kinase in chickens and mammals. She then returned to Johns Hopkins University Medical School as an assistant professor in the department of comparative medicine, where she studied Borna disease virus, which causes neurological disease in many species. She also participated in a research program on RNA replication of poliovirus at NIAID.
