Dr. Suzanne Fisher is the director of CSR’s Division of Receipt and Referral. This division is responsible for the receipt, processing, and assignment of more than 70,000 competing grant applications submitted to NIH each year. She joined the referral section in the then-Division of Research Grants in 1989. Prior to that, Dr. Fisher was an Executive Secretary (now called Scientific Review Officer) in the National Eye Institute and the National Cancer Institute. After receiving her Ph.D. in cell biology from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, she had postdoctoral training in the Laboratory of Pathology of the National Cancer Institute and was a staff fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Her research focused on biochemical genetics, including the evolution of patterns of gene duplication and expression, altered gene expression in tumors, and gene expression in oncogenic viruses.
