Dr. J. Fernando Arena serves as the Scientific Review Officer for the Infectious Diseases, Reproductive Health, Asthma and Pulmonary Conditions Study Section (IRAP), within the Population Sciences and Epidemiology Integrated Review Group, in the Division of AIDS, Behavioral and Population Sciences.
Dr. Arena is a medical geneticist who received his M.D. and his Ph.D. at the State University of Campinas, Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil and has done his postdoctoral training in medical genetics at the University of Washington, Seattle.
He was on the faculty of the State University of Campinas Medical School, Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil for several years and later become a faculty member at the Division of Genetics, Department of Pediatrics at University of Miami Medical School in Florida.
Before coming to NIH in 2003, Dr. Arena was director of translational research at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Familial Ovarian and Breast Cancer Center and associate professor in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology University of Miami, School of Medicine (2000-2003).
Dr.Arena joined CSR in 2007, after serving as a program director in the Epidemiology and Genetics Research Program of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Science at the National Cancer Institute. He is a founding fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics. His current research interests are in cancer genetics, cancer epidemiology and genomics variation in Hispanic/Latino Populations, microbiome and cancer. Dr. Arena has more than 70 publications in the areas of congenital malformations, X- linked mental retardation and cancer genetics.
